The first stereotype Fiske describes relates to succession. One reason for this stereotype may be how younger people expect elders to behave. The younger generation often assumes that the older generation has ‘had their turn’ and should make way for the younger generation.
Fiske describes consumption as the second stereotype. It’s not uncommon for younger people to believe that limited resources should be allocated to themselves rather than elderly adults. The same holds true for young people’s stereotypes about older people’s identity. According to the younger generation, older people should “act their age” and not try to “steal” the identities of the younger generation in terms of speech styles and clothing.
