Are ketogenic diets safe for diabetic seniors with a fatty liver?
The answer is no. This diet is unsuitable for young and healthy people, let alone seniors. The idea of a ketogenic diet is appealing to many people because it encourages you to eat many tasty things like butter, red meat, and cheese. But you’re consuming about 80% of your calories from fat. It is not a good diet for diabetic people, nor people with fatty liver.
When they looked at how keto diets affect blood sugar, they found that it doesn’t let the body use insulin the way it should. That can make you more insulin resistant, making you more likely to get type 2 diabetes in the long run. Some controversial studies point out that the ketogenic diet may benefit some people, especially those who have NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). Still, they are inconclusive, and more research is needed.
