If you are unable to make a word in Scrabble, what will happen?
You can choose between one and seven tiles to swap on your turn instead of playing a word. At least seven tiles must still be in the bag for this to work. Remember that you can’t exchange your tiles if you are near the end of the game or six or fewer tiles remain. By exchanging tiles, you are forming a word in that round. You’ll need to wait until your next turn before you can place an expression or exchange your tiles again.
Players use their turn to form a word, exchange tiles, or pass the game on to the next, so if the tiles in your rack cannot create a word, you can trade them. Each player is given seven tiles placed face down on their rack and can only be refilled after forming a word.
As long as the player still has their seven tiles on the rack, they can exchange the unplayable tiles, hoping they will receive a more playable selection.
If there are still at least 7 tiles left in the bag, you exchange your tiles for getting a more playable rack. When you draw a shelf full of consonants, for instance, you might exchange 3 or 4 tiles in hopes of pulling a vowel. You say you can’t make a word, but are you sure it’s impossible?
Depending on your language and dictionary, there are quite a few words that don’t require a vowel: brr, hm, psst, shh, and tsk, for example. And some words use several vowels: adieu, aalii, eulogia, and cooee, for instance.
It also helps to know all the two- and three-letter words since you can sometimes play a word alongside another word when you can’t hook onto it at the top or bottom.
If you’re getting into the joyful game of Scrabble and want to know what happens when you don’t can’t make a word, then you should start learning about the concept of “change ” term in this game. You can also refuse to make a word and still exchange 3 to 7 letters before making the optimal next move. Expert and experienced players know more words and can make a good game out of their given “bad” racks, using every letter to their advantage, which paves the road to victory.
