Yoga Nidra: It’s Relaxation for the Body and Mind
According to Fleming, Yoga Nidra is a type of “yogic sleep.” The typical way for students to do this is to lay on their backs while the teacher leads them through a guided meditation around their bodies.
There are many different types of Yoga Nidra, but they all focus on relaxation. “There are several methods,” adds Fleming, “but one is to go through every part of your body, literally from your individual toes to your brain.” “It takes around 20 or 30 minutes, and the aim is to promote both physical and mental relaxation.”
According to Fleming, Yoga Nidra and other more calming styles of yoga, such as Yin Yoga and restorative yoga, are getting popular. They allow people to unwind from their already stressful lives, she claims. “Having a more physical yoga practice like vinyasa offers plenty of benefits,” she adds, “but even including just one of these [slower-paced] types of sessions a week might make a difference in a person’s quality of life and stress level.”
