Why did you decide to retire?
In all honesty, I was hoping for a change. When you’re young, you can tolerate a lot. You can laugh off the fool boss. You don’t mind travelling to places for work or the long hours; it all seems a bit silly game.
But as you get older, one becomes less forgiving of fools. The same routine becomes tiresome year after year, and not controlling one’s career can cause tremendous stress. Jumping through hoops becomes soul-sucking, and it happens over and over again. And one becomes more reflective, asking questions like “what am I doing with my life” and so on. Stress is no longer easily shaken off; it starts to wear one down. So for me, the primary factor was to get off of the corporate gerbil wheel. Fortunately, I had planned for it financially and taken care of my health and mind over the years, which is critical.
