Why do dementia patients sleep so much?
Answers
Unfortunately, sleeping more and more is a common issue in people with dementia. Due to the extensive damage caused by the disease’s progress, the brain becomes weaker over time.
Therefore, the patient may feel the need to sleep during the day, and as a result, he will stay awake all night. In addition, the patient may experience disorientation as to time and place – for example, he may find it difficult to distinguish between night and day, or he may have difficulty using the toilet in the dark. It is not clear yet why dementia affects the sleeping pattern.
However, dementia affects the internal biological clock and other areas of the brain responsible for staying awake since people with dementia cannot judge what time it is.
