Why do you think care homes get such bad press?

Actor Kevin Whately – a charity’s ambassador – reports: “While across the country there are both successful and bad examples of care being provided – from residents in care homes to the staff who take care of them, from their families to the public at large –expectations are worryingly low. Those who do not have personal experience of care homes are afraid of them. Those who do have some experience do not associate good care with a decent quality of life. This is unsafe.
“Despite this negativity, the report calls the worst cases of care home abuse a ‘rare spectre,’ which may be why some called for calm as much of the media coverage focused on the most negative figures, declaring it a national ‘disgrace.’ Ian Buchan, director of care services at older people’s charity Independent Age, was among those to call for calm, mentioning that “there is a great deal of high-quality care that remains unnoticed.”
