Music Professors Bret Smith and Mark Samples believe that playing music can have numerous benefits, even as a hobby. Unlike sports and other physical activities, learning to play an instrument can be continued even when you’re getting older.

As Bret Smith says, it’s never too late to get into music. In playing music, you practice both gross and fine motor skills by utilizing small and great movements. When it comes to emotional health, playing music helps you get emotions out (catharsis).

Working with other people will improve your social skills as well. And just like any other skill, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as you learn. It’s worth mentioning that starting music as a hobby won’t be that expensive. You’ll only need to worry about buying the instrument. However, if you decide to get more serious, you’ll eventually need to purchase pricy equipment and new instruments.
