Does ageism exist in Ph.D. programs? If so, how does it show itself?
In my opinion, academic ageism is generally less worrying than other age discrimination cases. But it is true that it still exists. There’s a common conception that older students deserve more respect because of their experience and record. There is a belief among some people that younger students are necessarily more incompetent than older graduate students. This, I believe, is the most common cause of ageism in graduate programs.
