I am over 60 years old and struggling with finding a suitable job. After successfully working in Fortune 10 companies for more than 20 years, I am now unable to get a position at a local hospital. Is it all because of ageism?
Unfortunately, many different reasons are involved here. Some employers do not accept seniors at hospitals due to
1- The risk of physical problems such as sudden heart attack, stroke, or respiratory problems
2- Perceived concept of low energy
3- Obsolete and irrelevant knowledge and work practices
4- The inability to access information from the internet
5- Limited familiarity with modern apps and smartphones
6- The need for caregiving or sudden family problems such as spouse’s death or a family funeral
7- Dementia or Alzheimer’s
8- Issues of vision and hearing
It’s sad. Still, the list goes on, and the list above will show you how the younger employers and employees think of you. Senior’s knowledge and experience are undeniable. However, they’re no longer relevant and valuable to the young generation.
