1. Fruit
Blueberries are among the best fruits for the elderly, thanks to their low sugar and antioxidants. For instance, aging adults can improve their memory by eating blueberries. Other excellent choices would be the tropical mangoes and pineapple or the creamy and thick-textured banana.
2. Vegetables
If you find leafy greens like kale or spinach hard to chew, consider adding them to a smoothie. Don’t worry! They won’t change the flavour that much. They’re also high in calcium and folate, essential in a senior’s diet. Other nutritious options would be celery, rich in fibres, and cucumber, with hydrating effects.
3. Protein
Adding a high-quality protein powder to a smoothie is an excellent way of fighting protein deficiency, a common condition among the elderly. For example, hemp or peas are excellent protein sources, but they also carry a wide range of vitamins and minerals. Another choice is adding plain yogurt to your diet as affordable nutrition, rich in calcium and probiotics.
4. Healthy fat
Nuts and seeds are primary sources of essential fatty acids and an excellent addition to your smoothie. Another option is adding avocado. Avocados have a dose of monounsaturated fats (good for the heart) and can give your smoothie the texture of a milkshake.
5. Flavour boosters
Tasting good is the number one factor in enjoying a smoothie. Try flavour boosters like fresh mint leaves, vanilla extract, or cinnamon to your drink. Cocoa powder is also not a bad option, thanks to its positive effects on cognitive function.
