1- Stop the power conflicts.
Most individuals, including elders, resent being told what to do and when to do it. However, if your senior has a set daily or weekly pattern, the task is what they do at that time (getting dressed, eating, bathing, etc.). They’ll be more likely to go with the flow of activities once a routine has become a regular part of their lives, and they won’t feel like you’re forcing them to do something they don’t want to do.
2- Improve cooperation.
Nobody enjoys being surprised. There’s less stress and uncertainty in your lives when you and your older adult both know what and when will happen. And, if someone can predict the subsequent work or activity, they can mentally prepare and will be more willing to engage than if a random movement catches them off guard. Even if the elderly relative has dementia, their subconscious can develop a sense of the daily rhythm. However, unconscious of the routine, they feel more at ease and secure.
3- Decrease the amount of decision-making required.
It’s tiring to make decisions all day, even if they’re simple ones. As most duties, schedules, and activities have already been set, a regular daily routine saves precious mental energy. It drastically minimizes the number of decisions you’ll have to make, allowing you to focus on other things.
4- Enhance the sleep cycle.
A daily routine can also help seniors sleep better and more consistently, vital for their overall health. Additionally, maintaining a regular sleep schedule allows both of you to get better rest.
5- Spend time to enjoy each other’s company.
With all the responsibilities that come from being a caregiver, spending quality time with your older adult is sometimes pushed to the bottom of the priority list. Build quality time together into their daily, weekly, or monthly routine to make it worry-free. It could be as easy as beginning each day with a hug, concluding the day with a bedtime song, going for a walk in the park every Sunday afternoon, or eating lunch at their favourite restaurant once a month.
